 | Vestibule
Third LMS D1904 |
Perhaps the most characteristic type of LMS gangwayed
carriage after 1922 was the open third – ‘vestibule third’, as the LMS preferred
to call it. The open third class coach was popular with the
operating department for excursions and other services requiring high capacity
seating.
During the Stanier period, the building of open stock continued to be common,
though rather less than during 1923-32. D1904 is the period III version of
ubiquitous 56 seat open third with lavatory
and luggage space at both ends of the coach. Nine of these were converted to 42 seaters in 1937 for the ‘Coronation Scot’ train and were the only 42 seat
Stanier pattern open thirds.
 | Full Brake LMS D2007 |
D2007 became numerically the largest LMS full brake
diagram. The building of these 50ft brakes went on well into the war years and
they were some of the very few LMS coaches to be built between 1940 and 1945.
Not surprisingly, the passenger full brakes were generally the longest lived by
far of LMS pattern gangwayed coaches, many receiving either a full BR blue or BR
blue/grey repaint. They lasted to the end of steam (1968), but such was the
nature of recording at the time that final 'extinction' dates cannot be given.

D1904 with BR crimson and cream Livery |
It was common
practice after Nationalisation to repaint rolling stock in BR liveries. And the
open third wasn't exception.

it was common practice after Nationalisation to repaint rolling stock in BR
liveries.
 | Vestibule Third LMS
D1981 'Coronation Scot' |
Nine Vestibule Third (D1904) coaches were converted
with 42 seats, luxury finish and blue/silver livery for the 1937 'Coronation
Scot' sets viz. 8930/50/61/93/6/9003-4/6/29. These vehicles were equipped with
pressure heating and ventilation of the Thermo Reg type, separate hot and cold
systems being provided so as to ensure the maximum range of temperature control.
